Leadership

Really effective leaders at every level understand the organisation and the context in which they operate. They also understand the people they lead and can adapt their own style and approach so as to bring out the best in their team and fully realise their potential.

In today’s world, the constant push for results and increasing profitability can sometimes lead to quite an authoritarian style of leadership being adopted by some organisations. However, most organisations realise that leadership is a highly nuanced, constantly evolving concept, with many facets to it. We keep fully abreast of the latest developments in leadership theory and put an understanding of it at the heart of our training around leadership.

There are dozens of leadership theories, philosophies, models, and strategies. Situational, Functional, Inclusive, Transformational, and Ethical Leadership are among the most popular and common and RPfT often work with organisations to bring these models to life. If an organisation has its own model or set of leadership competencies we can work with them to demonstrate these in action.

RPfT’s Methodology

Over many years we have developed our own unique way of training in leadership at every level from shop floor to boardroom. We start with the simple question, ‘what are leadership behaviours?’ to help participants understand what are effective behaviours of good leaders. This can be widened from general leadership behaviours to the ones most effective for a specific client organisation. Sometimes we are guided by the client to facilitate the debate and pull out specific behaviours they want to emphasise.

It is vital for us that the participants see the behaviours live and in action in a situation they can relate to. This is where the drama starts. By seeing the behaviours acted out in situations the participants are familiar with, the learning can be brought to life for them. They are seeing leadership not just as a theory, but as it is, or should be practiced every day at work.  This technique, called Forum Theatre, is highly interactive, with the participants coaching the actor/facilitators through the scene. It increases awareness, creates a robust debate, embeds learning points and can easily be related to a leadership model already discussed.

In general terms, most of our programmes would cover the following leadership qualities: Integrity, Authenticity, Ability to delegate, Communication Skills, Self-awareness, Gratitude, Vulnerability, Learning agility, Influence, Impact, Empathy, Coaching Skills. It is worth emphasising that many of our Leadership programmes may focus only on one or two of these qualities, as each one can take a whole session in itself.
